D.C. police offer online crime mapping

Computer users can access a crime mapping system that shows what crimes have been committed in District neighborhoods.

The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department unveiled the D.C. Crime Map on Wednesday.

Online users enter an address or geographic area to retrieve crime data and a map that shows crime trends in those areas. Information can be viewed on a map or downloaded on a spreadsheet or text table.

“[The D.C. police department] is making crime information more readily available to many more people,” said D.C. Police Chief Charles Ramsey. “The result should be a more informed and vigilant community, stronger police-community partnerships and, ultimately, safer neighborhoods.”

Users can specify the distance around which they want the data, for example, 1,000 feet from 1015 15th St. NW. They can also specify a date range up to one year.

The system also compares the numbers and types of crime from the previous year. The address is crimemap.dc.gov.
