House Dem demands drug tests for the rich

Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wis., has proposed legislation aimed at forcing anyone claiming $150,000 in itemized deductions on their tax returns to submit to a drug test.

Under her bill, taxpayers who fail to submit a clean drug test along with their tax returns wouldn’t be allowed to itemize their deductions

Moore’s “Top 1 Percent Accountability Act” is a response to Republican efforts to force people on welfare to take a drug test. The GOP says these accountability measures are needed, but Moore says they are just attacks on the poor.

“Such baseless attacks against the poor inspired me to draft the Top 1 Percent Accountability Act of 2016,” she said.

“My legislation would require taxpayers with itemized deductions of more than $150,000 to submit to the IRS a clear drug test, or take the much lower standard deduction when filing their taxes,” she added. “It is my sincere hope that my bill will help eradicate the stigma associated with poverty and engage the American public in a substantive dialogue regarding the struggles of working- and middle-class families.”

Moore said Republican efforts to push drug tests on welfare users are “absurd” and “offensive.”
