Christie laughs off question about becoming Trump’s chief of staff

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie paused and then laughed off a question about what role he would want in President-elect Donald Trump’s administration during an interview on the “Today” show Thursday.

Asked by host Matt Lauer if he’d want to be Trump’s chief of staff come January, Christie paused for a couple seconds and looked at Lauer before dismissing the question.

“You don’t really think I’m answering any of these questions, do you?” Christie said, laughing. “You know me better than that.”

Getting more serious, Christie again continued to dodge the question.

“The answer is I’m not committed to doing anything in a new administration or not,” he said. “The bottom line is, I have a job to do to help get the administration ready. If there’s some role for me that I want to do, and that the president-elect wants me to do, we’ve known each other for 14 years. We’ll talk about it.”

Christie has led the Trump transition team since the real estate mogul locked up the Republican presidential nomination in May. Christie said Trump has avoided most of the work he’s been doing on the transition because he wanted to focus on winning the White House.

It’s unclear if Christie would be considered for a position in the administration given his implication in the Bridgegate scandal. That alleged role took on a new level last month when prosecutors said the governor was aware of his aides’ work slowing traffic on the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee, N.J., as political payback to the town’s mayor.
