Chief Cathy Lanier, others, to testify about D.C. police escorts

D.C. police Chief Cathy Lanier will be on the hot seat Thursday at the D.C. Council when she gives testimony about her departments’ decision to give police escorts to the rich, famous and otherwise well connected.

The department has been under fire since actor Charlie Sheen posted a few messages on Twitter about the high-speed escort he received from Washington Dulles International Airport to a performance at DAR Constitution Hall in April. Then, The Washington Examiner reported that the N.Y. Rangers hockey team picked up a D.C. police escort, a day after Lanier said it was the department’s policy only to give escorts to the president, vice president and foreign dignitaries.

An e-mail and written policies obtained by The Examiner show that it’s routine policy to provide escorts to characters like Sheen.

The council hearing will be run by at-large Councilman Phil Mendelson and will start at noon. Follow @fklopott for live updates.
