PITTSBURGH (AP) — Two men who subdued a gunman in a Pennsylvania bar and a woman who saved an elderly woman from flash flooding in Pittsburgh are among three being honored with Carnegie medals for heroism.
Fifty-one-year-old Kirk Haldeman, of Ligonier, and 52-year-old Michael Ledgard, of Greensburg, are credited with saving several patrons from assault at the Ligonier bar last July.
Twenty-one-year-old Christine Marty, of Sarver, swam to rescue a 69-year-old woman in flash flooding last August that killed four other stranded motorists in Pittsburgh.
Carnegie medalists or their heirs receive financial grants approved by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission. More than $34 million has been awarded to more than 9,000 honorees since 1904.
Pittsburgh steel baron Andrew Carnegie was inspired to start the fund after hearing rescue stories from a mine disaster that killed dozens of people.
