Mike Huckabee: Melania Trump ‘owes no one an apology’

CLEVELAND — Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said someone should have been more careful in crafting Melania Trump’s Republican National Convention speech, but she herself “owes no one an apology.”

“Somebody should have checked that out, clearly,” Huckabee told the Washington Examiner. “Whether it was intentional — I can’t imagine it would be — or somebody did a cut-and-paste and forgot to go back and edit it and change something. But, if somebody was that careless in helping craft that speech and did that to her, they owe her an apology. She owes no one an apology.”

As coverage of the similarities between Melania Trump’s Monday night speech and Michelle Obama’s 2008 DNC address dominated headlines on the second day in Cleveland, Huckabee called it “not fair” to the rest of the convention that “24 words” gained all the attention.

“She was poised and showed a level of sophistication and elegance that was absolutely overwhelming, and it’s very unfortunate that people are not talking about the warmth and effectiveness of her speech. They’re talking about 24 words out of it,” Huckabee said. “It’s not fair to really the entire Republican convention and that people would overshadow what was really a brilliant and masterful delivery of a speech.”

Instead, Huckabee said, “she should be basking in the glory of a great speech today and receive the adulation of the American people for really presenting herself as somebody who would be a remarkable [and] charming first lady.”
