NRCC says House must meet a ‘higher standard’ after sexual misconduct allegations

The National Republican Congressional Committee said Thursday that Congress must hold itself to a higher standard following Rep. Blake Farenthold’s decision not to run for office at the end of his term following accusations of sexual misconduct.

“I respect Congressman Farenthold’s decision and thank him for his service. Congress must work harder to hold ourselves to a higher standard, which is why the House took action to ensure this body is a safe and constructive workplace for all. However, there is still more work to be done,” NRCC Chairman Steve Stivers said in a statement.

Two sources confirmed to the Washington Examiner on Thursday morning that the Texas Republican lawmaker would not run again in the 2018 election.

The NRCC also said it is “confident” the GOP “will hold his seat.”

Farenthold was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple staffers over the past few years. Unlike other lawmakers who have resigned from office over the past month due to similar allegations, Farenthold will wait 12 months before leaving.

The House Ethics Committee last week said it will open an investigation into the charges against Farenthold.
