Alleged jewelry store burglar apprehended

The man wanted for allegedly burglarizing a Manassas jewelry store in February was apprehended Wednesday night in Prince George’s County, police said.

Police had identified 48-year-old Haywood Purnell Jr. as a suspect in the Feb. 18 burglary at at Ashby Jewelers, located at 9407 Main Street. Police said someone smashed out the front glass and stole about 40 watches, valued at $6,000.

Sgt. Tim Neumann, a Manassas police spokesman, said he didn’t have further details about where or how Purnell was caught. He is in custody of Prince George’s authorities and an extradition hearing is scheduled for Friday, Neumann said.

Purnell was wanted on burglary and grand larceny charges.
