President Trump painted a harrowing scene of the final moments of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
On Saturday night, U.S. forces conducted a successful raid of a city in northern Syria to kill Baghdadi, who detonated a suicide vest as American forces closed in on him.
In a press conference about the death on Sunday morning, Trump claimed the ISIS leader was “crying and whimpering” as he tried to escape.
“A large number of Baghdadi’s fighters and companions were killed with him,” Trump said. “He died after running into a dead-end tunnel, whimpering and crying and screaming all the way.”
Baghdadi died after detonating a suicide vest, killing himself and three of his children.
“He had dragged three of his young children with him,” Trump explained. “They were led to certain death.”
Trump noted that 11 other children had been safely removed from the compound by American forces during the raid.
The president said Baghdadi died “like a dog.”
“The thug who tired so hard to intimidate others spent his last moments in utter fear and total panic and dread.”
“Terrified of the American forces bearing down on him.”
