Two firefighters in the District of Columbia were named “Firefighter of the Year” Thursday by the Capitol Hill Exchange Club.
Sgt. Daniel McCoy was honored for rescuing two children from an apartment fire in June 2007.
He entered a smoke-filled apartment in the 2400 block of Alabama Avenue SE, and battled past the fire in the kitchen to a back bedroom, where the boys were sleeping.
He brought both children out of the building, and they made a full recovery, the club said.
Lt. Richard Lehan also was honored for rescuing two people from a burning building. He entered a home in the 5000 block of D Street NE in February 2007, found a woman inside and got her to safety.
He then went back into the building and found a child, whom he also rescued.
“There are four members of our community who are alive today because of the actions of Lt. Lehan and Sgt. McCoy,” said Fire and Emergency Medica Services Chief Dennis L. Rubin. The Capitol Hill Exchange Club honors firefighters each year for their work on behalf of the citizens and visitors of the nation’s capital.
