Twitter took down an account that was posing as antifa and was spreading violent rhetoric related to the protests after George Floyd’s death.
The social media giant confirmed the account belonged to a white nationalist group called Identity Evropa on Monday, according to NBC News. Twitter said the account violated the company’s manipulation and spam policy, citing its rule about creating fake accounts.
The account was suspended after it tweeted a remark inciting violence on Sunday.
“Tonight’s the night, Comrades,” @ANTIFA_US tweeted with a brown raised fist emoji. “Tonight we say ‘F— The City’ and we move into the residential areas… the white hoods…. and we take what’s ours …”
Twitter has apparently taken down other accounts linked to Identity Evropa which engaged in hateful conduct.
Identity Evropa is defined by the Anti-Defamation League as a “now-defunct white supremacist group that started in 2016 as one of the most active groups of the alt-right segment of the white supremacist movement.” It was also involved in the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. The group reformed as the American Identitarian Movement after negative publicity.
Antifa is a radical protest movement against extreme right-wing ideology and fascism. President Trump announced last week he is seeking to designate the group as a domestic terrorist organization.
