Amazon to close all 87 pop-up locations

Amazon will close down all 87 of its physical pop-up shops by the end of the month.

“After much review, we came to the decision to discontinue our pop-up kiosk program,” an Amazon spokeswoman told the Wall Street Journal.

The kiosks displayed some of Amazon’s most popular devices, like Alexa speakers and Kindle e-readers. The pop-ups were located in 21 states and appeared everywhere from malls to Whole Foods stores, which Amazon acquired.

As the pop-ups are closing, Amazon’s brick and mortar bookstore and so-called four-star stores, which sells items rated four stars or higher on the site, are expanding.

The spokeswoman for Amazon said that the storefronts will now “provide a more comprehensive customer experience and broader selection.”

“We look forward to opening additional locations of both stores this year,” she said, adding that products will expand to include, among other things, books, toys, games, home and kitchen goods, electronics, and Amazon devices.

It is not clear if the pop-up closures in the U.S. will affect those located outside of the country.
