Maryland may be hunting for the next superintendent of its top-ranked public school system, but the state’s other school leaders are staying put.
James DeGraffenreidt Jr. was unanimously re-elected president of the Maryland State Board of Education, while Charlene Dukes — the president of Prince George’s County Community College — was unanimously re-elected as vice president.
DeGraffenreidt has headed the school board for three years. He’s the former head of Washington Gas, which supplies heat to the Washington area, and sits on the boards of Harbor Bankshares Corp.n, Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co., and Vectren Corp.
He received his law degree and master’s in business from Columbia University, and his bachelor’s from Yale.
Dukes has been vice president for two years, and is a former member of the Prince George’s County school board.
She spent her undergraduate years at Indiana University of Pennsylvania before receiving her master’s and doctorate degrees in administrative and policy studies from the University of Pittsburgh.
