How Obama and Boehner became D.C.’s latest comedy duo

Former House Speaker John Boehner was an “enthusiastic participant” in President Obama’s comedy routine that he delivered Saturday during his final White House correspondents’ dinner, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said on Monday.

Part of Obama’s shtick included a video of him trying to decide what he’ll do now that he’s decided to stay in Washington for two years after leaving office while his youngest daughter, Sasha, finishes high school.

In the video, he finally seeks the help of an expert at wife Michelle’s urging. Obama picks up the phone and calls Boehner, who has remained in Washington since relinquishing the speakership last year.

The video showed Obama picking up the phone and calling Boehner, and Earnest explained that Obama did pick up the phone and call the Ohio Republican.

“Speaker Boehner has a well-known and very good sense of humor,” Earnest said. “And he made, I think, a very positive contribution to our comedic effort.”

Boehner and Obama filmed the bit on Friday, Earnest explained. There was no separate meeting between the two former adversaries, but they had the chance to chat during filming, Earnest said.
