Nearly a half-dozen Louisiana delegates who previously supported Marco Rubio released a letter on Thursday pledging to back Donald Trump at the convention and calling on the presumptive Republican nominee to choose Rubio as his running mate.

“Previously being undeclared after supporting Sen. Marco Rubio, the five undersigned delegates feel it is important to coalesce around one candidate and begin the process of party unity for the ultimate goal of defeating the Democratic challenger in the fall,” wrote the “Rubio Five.”

The letter, which was obtained by the Washington Examiner, continued, “We firmly believe the process of achieving consensus involves not only supporting the presumptive nominee but also asking him to listen to the will of the other voters who may not have originally supported him.”

The five delegates, who became free to support other candidates at the GOP convention when Rubio exited the race in mid-March, then urged Trump to consider Rubio as “a potential running mate this fall.”

“[H]is presence on the ticket would further bring our party a united voice,” they wrote.

In an interview set to air Thursday evening, Trump told Fox News’ Bret Baier that he “could” end up tapping the Florida senator as his vice presidential candidate.

“You know we always had a very good relationship. … Marco and I, and then it got a little bit nasty for a period of time,” he said. “Marco’s a good guy, a really nice guy, and I like him.”

“But not necessarily with respect to any position. But it could happen,” Trump added cautiously.

The de facto GOP nominee told the New York Times earlier this week that he plans to announce his vice presidential pick shortly before the Republican National Convention in mid-July.
