Medal of Honor recipient gets Illinois recognition

GURNEE, Ill. (AP) — An Illinois Tollway bridge over Interstate 94 near Gurnee has been named for a distinguished Vietnam War veteran from the area.

The Illinois Tollway unveiled a new sign Wednesday at the Grand Avenue overpass honoring Medal of Honor recipient Allen J. Lynch of Gurnee. The recognition stems from a resolution passed by the Illinois Legislature.

The 68-year-old Army veteran received the nation’s highest military honor for carrying three wounded comrades to safety while under fire in December of 1967. Fewer than 3,500 men and women have received the Medal of Honor.

Lynch was honored for his valor and for his ongoing advocacy on behalf of military veterans. He runs a foundation that provides financial help to veterans searching for employment, going to college or paying medical bills.
