Incoming White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci warned Tuesday that tensions between President Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions could soon reach a breaking point now that Trump has spent more than a week publicly airing his frustrations with the former Alabama senator.
“The president wants his Cabinet secretaries to have his back,” Scaramucci told reporters outside the White House Tuesday morning.
Trump described Sessions as “beleagured” earlier this week and criticized his investigative choices out of apparent dissatisfaction with Sessions’ decision to recuse himself from the Russia probe in March. That decision paved the way for Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to name Robert Mueller as special counsel of the investigation in May.
“I think Jeff Sessions was an incredible campaigner for the president. He was there early for him,” Scaramucci said on Tuesday. “There’s obviously an issue in the relationship.”
The incoming press chief said he did not know whether Sessions and Trump have spoken in the past 24 hours, during which Trump has excoriated Sessions on Twitter.
“I’m not a Cabinet secretary, so it’s above my rank in terms of how these guys communicate with each other,” Scaramucci said.
“We’ll get to a resolution shortly,” he added.
Earlier Tuesday, Scaramucci said during a radio interview that Trump most likely wanted to see Sessions removed from his administration.
