House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi announced early Tuesday that she has endorsed former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination.
Pelosi made the announcement as Californians head to the polls in the state’s primary and only hours after Clinton was named the presumptive nominee after topping the delegate threshold on the Democratic side.
“I’m a voter in California and I have voted for Hillary Clinton for president of the United States and proud to endorse her for that position,” Pelosi told “Good Morning America” on Tuesday.
“But I hasten to say that it’s not over until it’s over. Californians haven’t voted, nor have others in five states, so while the nomination may be there in numbers in terms of superdelegates, I didn’t endorse yet because I am a superdelegate and I think that the matter should be determined by the voters,” the California Democrat continued.
The former House speaker predicted that Sen. Bernie Sanders’ continued presence in the race would be “constructive” moving forward, as he has talked up his ability to alter the party’s platform.
“I think he will move forward in a way that will be constructive to the party,” Pelosi said.
Pelosi did not endorse back in the 2008 contest between Clinton and then-Sen. Barack Obama.
