President Obama said Donald Trump is rubbing off on Republican officials in a dangerous way, and scolded a GOP senator for instigating violence against Hillary Clinton.
“He actually joked about violence against Hillary,” Obama said about Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C. Over the weekend, Burr was caught suggesting that pictures of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton should come with bull’s eyes on them.
“That’s not something we do,” Obama told the audience at the University of North Carolina on Wednesday. “I tell you, if I heard a Democrat saying that, I would condemn them in a hot second. You don’t talk about violence against public officials, even in a joke.”
Burr later apologized. But Obama lamented that voters have become immune to the most provocative comments from Republicans and Trump.
“The problem is, this is becoming normal,” Obama said. “And it’s not normal.”
