There are no charter schools in Montgomery County, where officials in the award-winning public school system have traditionally scorned them.
But that’s likely about to change.
Joshua Starr, just days into his tenure as Montgomery’s superintendent, is recommending the approval of the county’s first charter school.
The Washington Examiner reported last week that former Superintendent Jerry Weast, who retired effective June 30, supported the creation of Community Montessori Public Charter School.
In a memo to the school board pre-dated July 7 – the board’s next meeting – Starr asks the school board to approve the application. They are scheduled to vote Thursday.
If the board approves Community Montessori, the school will offer pre-k through third grade beginning in the fall of 2012.
The Kensington-based organization behind the school, Crossway Community, saw their proposal soundly rejected by the school board last year.
A scathing decision by the Maryland Board of Education overturned Montgomery school officials’ ruling and forced the board to revisit the application.
