Democratic strategist James Carville ripped Sen. Bernie Sanders on a night when the Vermont socialist struggled to carry key states on Super Tuesday.
Carville, a former adviser to President Bill Clinton, said the Democratic Party made its decision on who will lead the ticket heading for the general election after the first results Tuesday evening showed former Vice President Joe Biden winning several of the 14 states that held contests.
“We might see Democrats starting to ask Sanders, ‘Look, let’s just don’t drag this thing out anymore than we have to,'” Carville said durng an appearance on CNBC. “He showed nothing, and if we’re going to beat Donald Trump, we can’t be lollygagging around here for a lot longer.”
Carville saluted South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn for his endorsement of Biden, which helped the former vice president solidify black voter support in Saturday’s primary in the Palmetto State.
Sanders has failed to capitalize on early momentum after he bested the field in New Hampshire and Nevada. His poor performance in South Carolina, especially among black voters, was mirrored by similar black voting data in Southern states such as North Carolina, Alabama, and Virginia.
Carville also said the campaigns of Sen. Elizabeth Warren and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg were essentially finished, claiming neither were “long for this world.”
