White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley defended the president’s comparison of the ongoing impeachment inquiry to a “lynching.”
President Trump implied that Democrats are conducting their impeachment process “without due process or fairness or any legal rights,” and he equated the move to a “lynching” on Tuesday morning.
Gidley responded to the backlash that ensued during an appearance on Fox News’ America’s Newsroom later that morning.
“I have not spoken with him directly about the tweet. I can speak about poor choices, and that’s what the media tries to do to him every single day. The president wasn’t trying to compare himself to the horrific history in this country at all,” he stated. “What he was trying to point out, clearly, was that he has been attacked relentlessly by the mainstream media without cause, without evidence, since the day he took over in this office.”
Gidley proceeded to attack the media and declared that the “real risk” with the impeachment inquiry dragging out is “for the American people.”
Speaking with reporters outside the White House, Gidley stressed his point again, saying, “The president’s not comparing what’s happened to him to one of the country’s darkest moments.”
