DHS secretary abruptly cancels Thursday border trip to attend White House meetings

A spokesman for the Homeland Security Department announced late Wednesday that Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen’s Thursday trip to see new wall construction on the southwest border has been canceled.

Nielsen will remain in Washington Thursday for “meetings at the White House,” though DHS did not immediately respond to an email about the meeting topics.

Nielsen had been scheduled to travel to various parts of New Mexico to see early construction efforts on the wall in Santa Teresa, N.M., and meet with local border and customs officers.

Last Friday, Nielsen and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis announced the first deployment of National Guard troops had been sent to the border.

On Thursday, California became the fourth and final border state to deploy guardsmen for border-related efforts.
