Rick Scott, Bill Nelson tied in Florida Senate race: Poll

Florida’s Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson and Republican Gov. Rick Scott are neck-and-neck in the race for Nelson’s Senate seat.

A Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday shows both men each have 49 percent support among likely voters in the Sunshine State.

Nelson leads 56 percent to 43 percent among independent voters, while each lawmaker holds the advantage over their opponent with the voters of their respective parties.

The poll showed 51 percent of voters approve of the job Scott is doing as governor, and 49 percent approve of the work Nelson is doing as senator.

“Sen. Bill Nelson, the Democratic incumbent, faces the most difficult challenge of his long political career,” said Peter Brown, assistant director of the poll.

Almost half of those surveyed said President Trump was not an important factor in how they will cast their vote for senator. Twenty-six percent said their support for Trump would be a factor in who they vote for, while 25 percent said their vote would be in opposition to Trump.

Trump tweeted his support for Scott a day before Florida’s primary last week. Scott “is doing a fantastic job” as governor,” Trump wrote.

The poll was conducted from Aug. 30 to Sept. 3 and surveyed 785 likely voters. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.3 percentage points.
