Melania Trump to donate inaugural gown to Smithsonian museum

First lady Melania Trump will be donating the gown she wore to the first of three inaugural balls to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History on Friday morning, the White House said.

The designer of Trump’s white silk off-the-shoulder gown told Women’s Wear Daily that he’ll be attending the event with the first lady.

“She asked me if I wanted to be her date, and I said, ‘Oh hell, yes,'” Herve Pierre said. “As a foreigner who became an American, to have your gown put in the Smithsonian Museum is a big huge honor. I got chills.”

Pierre recalled the night of the ball when President Trump saw his wife in the dress for the first time.

“He said, ‘Whoa, that’s really gorgeous,'” Pierre said.

Melania Trump continues a long tradition of first ladies donating their inauguration dresses.

Michelle Obama, who wore a white gown by designer Jason Wu, donated her first inaugural dress to the museum in 2010.
