McConnell laughs at Schumer over Merrick Garland for Supreme Court suggestion

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and his allies are laughing at Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., over his suggestion to nominate Judge Merrick Garland to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court.

In response to a report that Schumer told President Trump in a phone call that he should nominate Garland, the Twitter account for McConnell’s political operation posted a gif featuring non-stop laughter by former NBA star Michael Jordan.

According to the Washington Post, Schumer told Trump he should nominate Garland as a good way to bring the country together. He also told him it would be “cataclysmic” if he nominated someone hostile to court precedents on abortion and the Affordable Care Act.

Trump is expected to nominate someone from a 25-person list that includes Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett, and Raymond Kethledge, all of whom serve on different circuits of the U.S. Court of Appeals.

Former President Barack Obama nominated Garland after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia in 2016, but he never received a hearing after McConnell decided to keep the seat open.
