Bahama issues travel advisory for citizens visiting the U.S.

Bahama issued a travel advisory Friday for residents who plan to visit the United States in the near future, a move that may be a first ever due to this week’s police and civilian shootings.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration has taken a note of the recent tensions in some American cities over shootings of young black males by police officers,” government officials wrote in a press release. “We wish to advise all Bahamians traveling to the US but especially to the affected cities to exercise appropriate caution generally. In particular young males are asked to exercise extreme caution in affected cities in their interactions with the police. Do not be confrontational and cooperate.”

The advisory instructs people not to get involved in political or other demonstrations “under any circumstances and avoid crowds.” It also specifically warned young males to use extra caution on their trip to America.

The Caribbean country finished by telling its citizens if worse comes to worse, tourists can find refuge at the country’s consular offices in New York, Washington, Miami and Atlanta, as well as its honorary consulates in Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago and Houston.
