Ohio Gov. John Kasich said Tuesday’s elections need to be a wake up call to the Republican Party that if they candidates continue to only appeal to the base, they will lose elections.
“When you run for office, this is my opinion, if all you’re doing is catering to your base, what about everybody else?” Kasich said on ABC’s “This Week.”
“There are so many independents and so many gettable Democrats who are fed up with the left.”
The GOP suffered massive losses in Virginia, where Democrats kept the governorship and also managed to pick up numerous seats in the House of Delegates, causing concern in the party for the 2018 midterm elections.
Democrats also won the governorship in New Jersey, which was widely expected as Gov. Chris Christie’s popularity fell off a cliff in his last term in office.
Kasich said Republicans can try and stem the tide if they start taking care of legislative business at the federal level.
“I think if they pass a good tax bill, try to solve the DACA problem, reinforce our commitment to our allies, it’s not too late to turn this around,” he said.
