Matt Watson, Baltimore Blast midfielder, has been sidelined with a broken bone in the base of his big toe on his right foot after having a great rookie season last year. Watson, a native of Redditch, England, and former standout at University of Maryland, Baltimore County, scored 10 goals in 29 games last year. Watson, 23, returned to practice this week, but is hoping to regain a spot in the rotation by the end of the month ? just in time for the playoffs.
What?s your biggest limitation right now?
I would say cutting. If I need to change direction quickly, I?m hesitant to push off of it in case I break it again. It actually split in two, and it?s been wired together. It?s a little delicate right now. It?s never going to heal; it?ll never be back in one piece. It?s in two pieces, and it?s held together.
How challenging has it been to sit out?
Mentally, it?s been so frustrating. Just watching practice, I want to be out there so bad. I want to be back, and now that I?m back, I?m just so happy to be playing.
Did you have high expectations this year?
When I first did it, I didn?t think I broke it. So it was like, ?OK, I?ll be out for a couple weeks with a bruised toe.? When they told me it was broken, it was the worst. I?m just happy to be back on the field and hopefully help the team out in some way. I probably won?t be ready for afew weeks.
