Presidential candidate Andrew Yang fired dozens of aides following a poor performance in the Iowa caucuses, the first 2020 Democratic nominating contest.
Those out of jobs include the national political and policy directors for his campaign and the deputy national political director, according to Politico. The cuts took place across the entrepreneur-turned-politician’s entire campaign.
The layoffs came amid a turbulent time in Iowa as the caucus results remain incomplete. While there has not been a clear winner, Yang finished with only 1% of the vote. The first-time candidate for political office, 45, trailed far behind better-known rivals like Sen. Bernie Sanders, former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, former Vice President Joe Biden, and Sen. Amy Klobuchar.
Democratic National Committee chairman Tom Perez requested a recanvass in order to confirm the results of the caucus on Thursday after days of speculation about the integrity of the vote.
