Rep. Rashida Tlaib wants all members of Congress to submit DNA so they can better understand the “dehumanizing” experience of immigrants and their children.
“I think every member of Congress should go through this dehumanizing act of submitting their DNA,” the Michigan Democrat tweeted Tuesday. “The way we are treating immigrants, especially children, is disgusting and hurts all of us.”
Her tweet was a response to a CBS News article titled, “U.S. collecting DNA samples from some migrants — including teens — in first stage of program.”
Tlaib, 43, is a first-term congresswoman who is a member of “the Squad,” a group of female House Democrats who support a bevy of liberal policy issues.
In July, Tlaib said she “absolutely” agreed with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s suggestion that southern border detention centers be labeled “concentration camps.”
A week after the statement, Tlaib became emotional and cried during a press conference on immigration, saying, “We don’t need new laws; we need morality. We need an administration that understands there are human rights violations happening.”
