New Jersey police chief facing backlash for wearing ‘Let’s go Brandon’ sweater

A New Jersey police chief is facing scrutiny after being photographed wearing a “Let’s go Brandon” sweater.

Hamilton Township Police Chief Gregory Ciambrone was wearing the political sweater, meant as an insult to President Joe Biden, during an “ugly sweater” holiday party, according to a social media post from a member of the department.

A photo of the sweater, obtained by the Daily Beast, was posted to Facebook on Dec. 5. The sweater featured Donald Trump’s head wearing a Santa hat, as well as the phrase “Let’s go Brandon.”

“Let’s go Brandon” is a euphemism for the phrase “F*** Joe Biden,” born from an incident in which NASCAR fans chanted expletives about Biden but a reporter falsely claimed they were cheering for racer Brandon Brown.

“Can’t believe he wore that in public to a party,” a local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, told the outlet.

“There are a million ugly Christmas sweaters the police chief could have worn,” Richard Rivera, director of the Penns Grove Police Department, told the outlet. “The chief chose to be photographed among his peers wearing one to make a political statement during a time of significant racial divide and police mistrust in America.”

Rivera said that the chief’s wearing of the sweater doesn’t necessarily violate department policies. “Police executives should refrain from making comments that violate their agency rules of conduct or portray police in a poor light where it would question their ability to fairly and impartially enforce the law,” he added.
