A water hydrant erupted at a North Carolina resort, dousing skiers on a chairlift on a freezing day.
The incident took place at Beech Mountain Ski Resort on Friday after management said a guest skied into the hydrant while snow-making operations were taking place, according to WSOC-TV. The report cited a statement from the resort that said two people were taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, not including the person who ran into the hydrant.
Video footage posted to social media showed skiers on a chairlift getting hit with water in below-freezing weather conditions, leading to criticism about how the water was not more quickly shut off.
One of the skiers, Emma Lopinto, is a college student at Clemson University and was celebrating her 19th birthday with her friend.
“We just grabbed each other and ducked our head, and all I remember is the metal bar flying up and then me flying up. I don’t remember anything, and I remember opening my eyes belly first on the ground,” she said.

Lopinto posted on Facebook saying she is in a lot of pain but is “thankful that it is not as bad as it could’ve been.”
Others jumped down 25 feet from the chairlifts.

The statement from the resort cited a “difficult situation” in which it took action to shut off the water and assist the remaining skiers “as quickly as possible.”
