Socialist Sanders Speaks Out Against Privatizing Post Office

Bernie Sanders has never met a corrupt, inefficient, obsolete government agency or initiative he didn’t like. The only thing he finds objectionable is that they aren’t being given enough taxpayer money. Earlier in the week, during the Las Vegas debate, he bragged on his efforts to get the Veterans Administration more money. Only Sanders would feel compelled to embrace the VA which spends lavishly while its clients wait for months to see a doctor and some die while waiting. With him, it is always about inputs.

How much money did we spend (waste) and why, in the name of all that is decent, are we not spending more?

So, as Eric Katz of Government Executive writes,

After the Democratic presidential debate in Las Vegas on Tuesday, Sanders stuck around on Wednesday to address the American Postal Workers Union All Craft Conference. Sanders, a long-time USPS advocate, spoke of his desire to preserve postal delivery standards and eliminate the agency’s requirement to prefund future retirees’ health benefits.
The senator praised the Postal Service’s ability to deliver mail to any customer, “whether you are a low-income elderly woman living at the end of a dirt road in Nevada or Vermont or a wealthy CEO living on Park Avenue.”
“The beauty of the Postal Service is that it provides universal service six days a week to every corner of America, no matter how small or how remote,” Sanders said. “It supports millions of jobs in virtually every sector of our economy. It provides decent-paying union jobs to some 500,000 Americans, and it is the largest employer of veterans.”

No mention of customer service or satisfaction. Sanders needs to visit an actual post office and spend a little time standing in line while waiting for a surly clerk to sell him a few stamps.

For Sanders, the problem is not that the USPS is inefficient or wasteful or that it routinely loses money, but that it has enemies. And they would be those:

… same billionaires who want to privatize Social Security, Medicare and public education, [and] also want to privatize the Postal Service.”

And steal lunch money from kids.
