Kansas congressman facing three felonies in voter fraud case

Rep. Steve Watkins is facing four charges stemming from an investigation into possible voter fraud.

Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay announced three felony charges and one misdemeanor charge against the Kansas Republican on Tuesday. Watkins came under investigation by the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office after he allegedly listed a Topeka UPS store as his address when voting in the 2019 general election. A spokesperson for the congressman said last year that it was a mistake and would be corrected.

The investigation, which was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, kept receiving updates on the statements and documents related to the case.

Watkins is facing felony counts of interference with law enforcement and providing false information, voting without being qualified, and unlawful advance voting as well as a misdemeanor count of failing to notify the Department of Motor Vehicles of change of address.
