AVALON, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say heavy seas have damaged a boatyard on Catalina Island, throwing vessels onto their sides, and also closed major docks.
Avalon Harbor Master Brian Bray says he’s had reports that water poured into the Catalina Boat Yard on Tuesday night, pushing around 3,000-pound rocks, spilling dirt and sand and hurling boats from jackstands.
He says the heavy surge also tore away a children’s swim platform and closed several docks to incoming traffic — but he says there’s little traffic because most boaters are waiting in mainland harbors for the hurricane-spawned surge to subside.
The surge halted most Wednesday trips of Catalina Express ferries because the boats can’t tie up at the lurching docks. Spokeswoman Elaine Vaughan says only four or five of 18 scheduled runs may be completed.
