A sheriff’s department station in California warned locals they will face hefty fines if they don’t comply with a face covering ordinance.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department West Hollywood Station said deputies will issue citations to people who are not wearing face masks in public, part of an effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
“Beginning this month, we will start issuing Administrative Citations for people who are not conforming to the order to wear a face cover/mask in public,” the station tweeted Wednesday. “Our last option was to conduct enforcement by issuing an Administrative Citation, but the risk to the Community health is too great.”
Update: The fine is $250 and a fee of $50 for a total of $300 for the first offense. pic.twitter.com/o6QE3fkucu

A first offense for not wearing a face mask in public will result in a $250 fine and $50 fee, a second offense will bring a $1,000 fine, a third offense a $2,000 fine, and a fourth offense will result in a $5,000 fine.
Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a mandate in the state on June 18, requiring people to wear face masks while in public.
“Californians are now REQUIRED to wear face coverings in public spaces. Together — we can slow the spread. Do your part. Wear a mask,” the governor tweeted.

Public officials across the country are also urging people to wear masks as coronavirus cases increase in many places.
Newsom tweeted Wednesday, following his decision to shut down bars and restaurants weeks after allowing them to reopen, that wearing masks shows “a sign of someone who gives a damn.”
“Wearing a mask is a sign of toughness. Of resolve. A sign of someone who gives a damn. Who wants to solve a problem. Who takes responsibility. I think that’s a beautiful thing,” he wrote.
