George Conway attacks ‘unshowered’ Trump visit to evangelical church

George Conway, husband of top White House aide Kellyanne Conway, blasted President Trump over his surprise visit to an evangelical church.

President Donald Trump listens to Pastor David Platt before Platt prays for Trump at McLean Bible Church, in Vienna, Va., Sunday June 2, 2019.

In a three-tweet thread, Conway, a persistent Trump critic, took issue with the White House saying Trump was visiting McLean Bible Church Sunday to pray for the victims of the Virginia Beach shooting when he did not. Instead lead pastor David Platt prayed for Trump.

“So let me see if we now have this straight: After a long round of golf on Sunday, an unshowered Trump, still in golf wear, arrives virtually without warning at an evangelical Christian church in NoVa. The White House asks the pastor to pray for Donald J. Trump, … which the pastor does. But the White House lies to the public and says the prayers are for the victims of the shooting in Virginia Beach. Many in the evangelical congregation understandably take offense at Trump’s political, narcissistic use of their church, … and so the pastor issues a propitiative letter that explained how he was blindsided and delicately acknowledged how ‘some within our church, for a variety of valid reasons, are hurt that I made this decision’ to bring Trump into the services. It’s all so … odd.”

Platt issued an apology to the congregation in a Tuesday letter and said he said he was caught off guard by the president’s visit to the church.

“My aim was in no way to endorse the president, his policies, or his party, but to obey God’s command to pray for our president and other leaders to govern in the way this passage portrays,” Platt said in the statement.

“I know that some within our church, for a variety of valid reasons, are hurt that I made this decision,” Platt said. “This weighs heavy on my heart. I love every member of this church, and I only want to lead us with God’s Word in a way that transcends political party and position, heals the hurts of racial division and injustice, and honors every man and woman made in the image of God.”

Conway and Trump have often blasted each other over Twitter, with Trump calling him a “stone cold loser and husband from hell.” Kellyanne Conway defended Trump’s comments about her husband, saying that the president should be able to defend himself from the attacks.
