Pop star Shakira could face eight-year sentence over tax evasion charges in Spain

Her hips don’t lie, but they may go to prison.

Spanish prosecutors announced Friday that they would be seeking a prison sentence of over eight years for pop star Shakira over alleged tax evasion.

This announcement comes after Shakira rejected a plea deal on Wednesday because she is reportedly “absolutely certain of her innocence.” While she is “confident” she can win the case that she believes is “a total violation of her rights,” her lawyers are still open to an agreement before the start of the trial, which does not yet have a start date.

Shakira was one of the many celebrities accused of tax fraud in the Pandora Papers published in October last year. Prosecutors alleged she defrauded the Spanish tax office of $4.58 million between 2012 and 2014. As a result, they are also seeking a fine of $24.5 million from the pop star.

FC Barcelona defender Gerard Pique began a public relationship with Shakira in 2011, with the pop star allegedly moving to Spain shortly after. Now, Shakira is facing accusations that she maintained official tax residency in the Bahamas until 2015. Shakira claims to have already paid $17.52 million in taxes to Spain. She claims that the country is attempting to claim taxes on income she earned during international tours and her position as a judge on The Voice.

The 45-year-old pop star announced her separation from Pique a month ago, with whom she has two sons.
