Source: Brown could face fraud charges

D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown is likely to face federal fraud charges, a law enforcement source told The Washington Examiner on Wednesday.

Federal authorities have been scrutinizing Brown and his 2008 campaign for the D.C. Council for more than a year.

The immediate implications of the charges were unclear, except that they would further rattle the District’s political landscape.

As recently as Tuesday, Brown told reporters that he had no plans to resign.

Brown was not at the Wilson Building for much of Wednesday morning, and the door to his suite of offices was locked.

Bill Miller, a spokesman for U.S. Attorney Ronald Machen, declined to comment, and Brown’s spokeswoman could not immediately be reached for comment.
