Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy criticized former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s first Democratic debate performance, saying the billionaire was “absolutely savaged” by his rivals who punched at him “like a pinata.”
Portnoy said he was watching college basketball and turned on the ninth Democratic debate “right when Bloomberg was getting crucified.”
“I really didn’t have any opinion about Bloomberg,” Portnoy told Fox News host Tucker Carlson. “The only thing I knew about him was when he tried to get rid of big drinks, big Cokes. That’s all I knew about him, but this was like watching Game of Thrones — somebody get absolutely executed right in front of your eyes.”
Sen. Elizabeth Warren sparred with Bloomberg over nondisclosure agreements the mayor signed with several women who reportedly accused him of sexual harassment. Bloomberg responded that he only had a “few” NDAs “because some women didn’t like some jokes I told.”
“Once he hesitated and once he panicked and once he was going down the rabbit hole, if I were him, I would’ve just walked offstage. I would’ve said, ‘You know, to hell with it. I’ve got billions of dollars. I don’t need this in my life,'” Portnoy said. “Somebody like me, who was pretty neutral on him, now thinks he’s the village idiot.”
Bloomberg has risen sharply in national and state polling throughout February after spending more than $400 million to inundate TV and radio airwaves with advertisements.
