WATCH: Back to the Future’s Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd share emotional reunion

Back to the Future stars Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd reunited with an emotional hug at New York Comic Con this past weekend.

The famous Back to the Future duo appeared onstage as Fox made an air guitar move, a reference to his character Marty McFly and the film’s “Johnny B. Goode” scene. The pair then hugged before taking a seat to reminisce.

Lloyd, 83, recalled how Fox was brought in to replace Eric Stoltz, who was originally cast as McFly, with several weeks of filming already complete.

“The announcement, at 1 o’clock in the morning after we were shooting for six weeks, was that the actor playing Marty would no longer be playing Marty and that tomorrow, we would start shooting with Michael,” Lloyd, who played Doc Brown, said per Entertainment Tonight. “I felt that I barely made it through the six weeks, and now I was gonna have to do it again?”

Fox, 61, said he hesitated to join the project, noting his mother was concerned he would be stretched too thin between filming Back to the Future while continuing to shoot his TV show Family Ties. He said it was “a thrill” to work with Lloyd.

“All I had to do was just react,” Fox said. “Just take it in and let it wash over me. I thought [Lloyd] was brilliant. That was the whole thing: Be with Chris and let it be Chris, and enjoy it … It was a thrill. Anytime I got to work with him, I knew it was gonna be a good day.”

Lloyd affirmed the connection the two shared.

“The chemistry was there from the first scene we had. It was alive, and it remained that way for three movies,” Lloyd said of the duo’s onscreen presence. “It hasn’t gone away, by the way.”

Video of Fox, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991, reuniting with Lloyd spread across social media on Sunday.

“Such a beautiful moment,” writer and producer Giles Paley-Phillips wrote.

Another fan wrote: “Back To The Future reunion at New York Comic Con. So sad to see Michael J Fox like this but he’s such a fighter. That hug with Christopher Lloyd … so emotional.”

“Simply the best,” a fan tweeted. “I tried to hold back the tears, but it didn’t work. Love these two. Michael J. Fox is simply just the most amazing human. Christopher Lloyd, oh my heart.”

In an interview with AARP last year, Fox said he was grateful for what he has accomplished.

“People often think of Parkinson’s as a visual thing, but the visuals of it are nothing. … I’m really blunt with people about cures. When they ask me if I will be relieved of Parkinson’s in my lifetime, I say, ‘I’m 60 years old, and science is hard. So, no,”’ Fox said. “But the disease is this thing that’s attached to my life — it isn’t the driver.”
