Dan Crenshaw joins 70 lawmakers forgoing $174,000 salary until shutdown is resolved

Rep. Dan Crenshaw, a freshman congressman from Texas, said Thursday he will forgo his pay as the partial government shutdown is set to hit week three at the end of this week.

“I cannot in good conscience get paid while federal employees’ financial futures hang in the balance because of this partial government shutdown. I’ve asked the Chief Administrative Officer to withhold my pay until we have come to an agreement to adequately fund border security,” Crenshaw said in a post on Twitter.

Crenshaw joins more than 70 members of Congress, including 58 House lawmakers and 13 senators, who have refused pay since Dec. 22. Fourteen are newly elected.

Federal employees have not missed a paycheck until now but are slated to miss their first one Friday.

Some lawmakers have asked for their pay to be held while others have shared they plan to donate it.

House members and senators make $174,000 annually.
