Trump says Mueller exposed ‘elaborate hoax’ meant to overturn 2016 results

President Trump told a campaign crowd Thursday that special counsel Robert Mueller’s report was a “total exoneration” exposing an “elaborate hoax” by a “group of major losers,” “crooked journalists,” and “the deep state” to overturn the 2016 election results.

“After three years of lies and smears and slander, the Russia hoax is finally dead. The collusion delusion is over,” Trump declared at a rally in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The celebratory speech follows Attorney General William Barr’s Sunday evening summary of Mueller’s findings, including that there was no evidence of the Trump campaign engaging in criminal collusion with Russia.

Trump told a cheering crowd that claims his campaign colluded with Russia were part of “the single greatest hoax in the history of politics in our country.”

“Total exoneration, complete vindication. It’s interesting. Robert Mueller was a God to the Democrats, was a God to them, until he said there was no collusion,” Trump said.

He added: “The crazy attempts by the Democrat Party and the fake news media right back there, and the deep state to overturn the results of the 2016 election have failed … This is nothing more than a sinister effort to undermine our historic election victory and to sabotage the will of the American people.”

“The Russia witch hunt was a plan by those who lost the election to try to illegally regain power by framing innocent Americans, many of them. They suffered. With an elaborate hoax,” Trump charged.

He said, however, that “despite this terrible cloud, this phony, corrupt, disgusting cloud, we have done more together in the first two years than any administration in the history of our country.”

Trump mocked his political opponents, saying that after Mueller’s findings, “They are on artificial respirators right now.”

Attacking House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., he added: “Little pencil neck Adam Schiff — he has the smallest, thinnest neck I’ve ever seen. He is not a long ball hitter.”

Trump mimicked Schiff, saying, “I saw today, ‘Well, we don’t really know there still could have been some Russia collusion’. Sick, sick. These are sick people.”
