The National Park Service is celebrating Frederick Douglass’ birthday and the fight against slavery with a party at his historic house in Southeast Washington on Saturday.
Luis C. deBaca, the U.S. Ambassador to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, will deliver the keynote address for the event. Along with music, games and face painting, programs focusing on Douglass’ work and the ongoing fight against slavery will be featured.
Though the famous abolitionist’s legacy lives on — he would have turned 194 this year — the United Nations estimates that more than 2 million people remain enslaved throughout the world.
The celebration begins at 10 a.m. at the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site.
