Woman, 85, dies during police transport in Fairfax County

An 85-year-old Oakton woman died during police transport in Fairfax County, authorities said.

Shortly before 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, officers were called to Inova Fairfax Hospital. According to the Fairfax County Police Department, Mary Jean Martin showed signs of mental confusion while she was examined and there were concerns about her safety.

Martin was put into a police cruiser to be taken to Woodburn Mental Health for further evaluation, officials said. During the drive, she experienced medical distress, leading officers to call rescue workers and start CPR.

An ambulance took Martin back to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Martin’s cause of death hasn’t been determined, police said.
