MMM, TASTY!
During an annual family reunion in the mountains of southern Virginia, it’s customary at suppertime for the members to go around the table and describe their favorite part of the day. It’s a tradition that’s been going on for as long as any family member can remember.
Typical responses include going hiking with a loved one, diving off the high dive into the lake, building a sandcastle, seeing the sheer joy on the young cousins’ faces when they greet each other again.
When it came to the turn of the family’s newest member, a nearly 3-year-old girl from College Park, her answer was a little more personal.
“My favorite part of the day was eating my toenail,” she said proudly.
Roars of laughter erupted around the table, but the girl’s mother and grandmother were not so amused.
IT’S NOT THE HEAT …
An intern arriving in the District just as the heat wave set in felt tricked.
Sipping an afternoon coffee at Caribou Coffee, she said she had researched the city and still felt unprepared for the humidity.
“You know, Washington was built on a swamp,” she said. “They don’t tell you that on the Wikipedia page.”
CUSTOM LYRICS
Early one July evening, two young women visiting the District walked along M Street in Georgetown, coming upon two teenage boys playing guitar.
The music was fine enough, but they didn’t think much of it until the song started to have some curious lyrics — the boys were describing them, their hair, their looks.
The women turned around and laughed. Then more people walked by, and the boys switched up their tunes to describe the others.
OOPS, THIS IS MY FLOOR
There’s polite elevator banter, and then there’s something else entirely.
“Good morning. How are you doing today?” asked a man heading up the 12th floor of his office building, to a young lady destined for the fifth. She said she was doing well, and asked the same of him.
“I just had one of those Subway breakfast sandwiches,” he replied. “It’s not sitting well.”
The woman paused, not knowing what to say, when the elevator finally came to her floor. She promptly exited.
