Incoming Mayor Dixon finalizing administration before taking office

In the week before she takes office, incoming Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon is putting the final players of her administration in place.

Dixon announced on Wednesday that M.J. “Jay” Brodie will remain president of the Baltimore Development Corp. and that DLA Piper attorney George Nilson will become the next Baltimore City solicitor.

Nilson, whose appointment was reported Tuesday by The Examiner, is replacing current City Solicitor Ralph Tyler, who is joining Gov.-elect Martin O?Malley?sadministration as chief legal counsel.

“The city?s top lawyer has to have the right perspective, insight and confidence to provide sound legal advice in a number of diverse and seemingly unrelated areas to the mayor and other clients comprising city government,” Dixon said in a statement about Nilson.

Dixon also had high praise for Brodie, saying he “understands the complexities of development projects like no other.” Brodie has led the BDC since January 1996.

Including a six-year stint as a deputy attorney general, Nilson?s legal career spans five decades, including leading legal teams on tobacco litigation and consumer controversies.

Brodie formerly served as executive director of the Pennsylvania Avenue Development Corp., commissioner of the Baltimore City Department of Housing and Community Development, and as a senior vice president of RTKL Associates Inc., an international development firm headquartered in Baltimore.
