Donald Trump warned Americans on Monday that Hillary Clinton is “likely to be under investigation for a very long time” and would thus be too distracted to lead the country as president.
Last week’s bombshell announcement by FBI Director James Comey, that the bureau had reopened its probe into Clinton’s handling of classified material, breathed new life into Trump’s campaign, which had been dogged by sexual assault allegations and dwindling poll numbers.
“What happened today, starting with the FBI, maybe the system will become a little less rigged. Beautiful,” the Republican nominee, told a crowd of supporters Friday night. “It’s everybody’s deepest hope that justice at last can be properly delivered,” he declared at an event on Saturday.
But as Trump continued to criticize Clinton on Monday, he also cautioned voters who remain undecided just eight days before the Nov. 8 election.
“Hillary is not the victim,” he boomed. “The American people are the victims of this corrupt system in every way and this is your one chance, right now on Nov. 8, to change it.”
Though the FBI has been reluctant to discuss any details related to its decision to revisit the Clinton email case, much less provided a timeline for how long the probe could take, Trump predicted that his opponent “is likely to be under investigation for a very long time.”
“If Hillary Clinton is elected, she would be under protracted criminal investigation and probably a criminal trial, I will say. So we have a criminal trial for a sitting president [and] in the meantime, [Russian President Vladimir] Putin… and all of the other leaders — all of these people will sit back and they will laugh and they will smile,” Trump said.
He continued, this time tailoring his warning to Michigan voters before him: “The investigation will last for years. The trial will probably start. Nothing will get done. I can tell you, your cars will continue to leave Michigan [and] our country will continue to suffer.”
“She’s unfit and unqualified to be the president of the United States and her election would mire our election and our country in a constitutional crisis that we can not afford,” Trump said.
