Former House Speaker John Boehner said Wednesday that President Trump is “still learning” how to be president and said he never figured Trump would make it to the Oval Office.
The former speaker said Trump “did what he could” with healthcare, and said the president has pleased world leaders with his commitment to fighting the Islamic State. But Boehner said Trump has struggled in other areas.
“Everything else he’s done has been a complete disaster,” Boehner said Wednesday at the KPMG Global Energy Conference, according to Rigzone. “He’s still learning how to be president.”
Trump and Boehner have been friends for more than a decade, the former House speaker said, and they have played golf together. Boehner said he “never envisioned him” as president.
Boehner resigned from Congress in October 2015 after Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., filed a motion to oust the Ohio Republican from the speakership. But Boehner told the crowd at the conference that he is happy with his decision to leave the House early.
“I wake up every day, drink my morning coffee and say hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah,” Boehner said.
